Strong Women! International Women's Day

To celebrate International Women's Day we offered a free Self Defence class for Women on March 9. Sensei Pedro showed his favourite self defence techniques and the women trained with each other and male students/coaches to test and improve the technique. Grappling Bros Wollongong believes through the discipline and teamwork of martial arts we can create a more peaceful, strong & healthy community.

Women in our community are more likely to be victims of physical and sexual violence, harassment or intimidation - both at home and outside of it. Self defence training teaches practical techniques - designed for smaller and lighter person to defend and escape from a larger, heavier opponent. With regular martial arts training - your body and mind gets used to physical confrontation, muscle memory learns how to respond and you learn how to avoid and respond to physical situations before you actually ever encounter them.

But self defence training is so much more than building physical strength - it helps overcome anxiety, builds confidence and a firm mindset - supporting better mental & emotional health. Training with other women and if you feel comfortable, male team mates can help some women overcome anxieties and put difficult past experiences behind you. Martial arts training includes both cardio and strength training (muscle). It is an excellent all-round exercise and will give you a powerful, lean physique.

It was great to see so many of you for this short seminar - we had lots of fun and we hope you did too!

If you'd like to train with us - let us know! We train in mixed classes but if you are uncomfortable training with men you are always able to train with women only; we are more than happy to accomodate personal or cultural needs just make a time to chat and we'll work something out. (Our coaching team at present is all male, you can also speak in confidence with Asha, our administration manager if you'd prefer to speak with a woman.)

We support every student to overcome barriers to training. Our team is friendly, inclusive and family-oriented and our coaches will look out for your well-being both as a fighter and as a person.

Stronger Together! Happy International Women's Day.
